To put it simply vitamin B12 is just one vitamin, and B complex is made up of eight different B vitamins along with B 12 that help the body function and run properly. Vitamin B 12 by itself helps with DNA synthesis by helping with the production of red blood cells, and help to keep nerve cells healthy. B complex made up of a number of different B vitamins helps with hormone production, metabolism, and the functioning of the nerves, heart, muscles, and the digestive system. Vitamin B 12 works with folic acid and B 6 in order to control homocysteine levels in the body. Studies have shown that an excess of homocysteine can result in diseases such as coronary disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and osteoporosis. B vitamins are water soluble, so any excess that is in your body will be excreted out through urine every time you pee. Don’t be alarmed if you are taking B vitamins, whether it is a complex or just B 12 if your urine looks a little darker or brighter than usual. This is just your body’s way of getting rid of the excess vitamins in your system and it can cause your urine to look a little different, so taking an excess amount of B vitamins will not hurt you.
