Vitamin B12 supplement use is usually associated with anemia, but bodybuilders know that B12 is essential to overall good health and wellness. You cannot build a strong body on a weak foundation. Vitamin B12 is responsible for synthesizing DNA and red blood cells. It is also the shield builder that provides nerve cells protection from stress-related attack.
Vitamin B12 is a friend in the bodybuilding arena because of its energy increasing effects. Workouts last longer and are more productive when the body is energized and full of stamina. The muscle groups also rely on this increased energy for repair and rest in between workout sessions. Some studies even show that B12 supplements cause more restful sleep and produce more regulated sleep patterns. This is due to its possible connection to the brain’s production of melatonin, a natural sleep aid.
Some bodybuilders claim that B12 aids in digestion. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach and other gastric juices, are enhanced by the presence of vitamin B12. This helps to better break down all the foods in the stomach. The result is a higher rate of absorption through the stomach and intestinal linings of all food that is consumed. Consequently, the body is better nourished without having to ingest any larger amounts of food than normal.
Foods naturally rich in vitamin B-12 are mainly animal products. Meats, cheeses and eggs all qualify as vitamin B12 enriched foods. Fruits and vegetables are low in B12, yet they contain many other nutrients essential to the bodybuilder’s needs. For this reason, bodybuilders eat a balanced diet containing a variety of food groups. For additional nutrition and specific building blocks, they take supplements in various forms. Vitamin B12 is available in drinkable liquid, chewable tablets and injections. All forms are readily absorbed by the body, but the injection B12 has the fastest absorption rate, as it enters the body without going through the digestion process.
Bodybuilders and average persons alike require the immune support that vitamin B12 provides. Increased energy and a strong nervous system are also required by all bodies; not just bodybuilders. It’s important that everyone, but especially vegetarians, get checked periodically for B12 deficiency before symptoms arise. Common signs of B12 deficiency are fatigue, memory loss, dizziness and numbness in the extremities. If these symptoms are found to be the manifestation of B12 deficiency, a supplement must be introduced into the diet immediately. Nerve damage can be the result if the body remains B12 deficient for too long.
Athletes and non-athletes take heed. All bodies are built better and stronger when they are built with vitamin B12.
