Endometriosis is a more common condition in women than is generally realized. It occurs when endometrial cells grow in areas of the body other than the lining of the womb, including the fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder and bowels. These cells react to the normal hormonal changes of the monthly menstrual cycle and behave in the same way as those which line the womb, but after thickening cannot be eliminated from the body in a menstrual bleed, thereby causing pain, cramping and extreme discomfort.
Women who suffer with endometriosis have been found, during the menstrual cycle, to have lower levels of Vitamin B12 than other women, and this deficiency can contribute to a serious decrease in the natural production of hemoglobin, or red blood cells, which carry iron around the body. This then leads to iron-deficiency anemia, a physically weakening condition where tissues and organs suffer from insufficient oxygen in the bloodstream.
Taking Vitamin B12, or folate, which is a water soluble vitamin that forms part of the B-Complex, can significantly improve mood swings, depression and nervous irritation during the menstrual period, while combating memory loss and boosting the strength of the body’s nervous system. As it is also important for carbohydrate and protein metabolism which releases energy in order for the body to function, it is vitally important in helping to overcome fatigue as well as insomnia.
The liver requires Vitamin B12 in order to function at its most efficient strength in fighting bodily toxins, and therefore any deficiency during the menstrual period can result in a serious increase of hormonal estrogen in the body resulting in far more painful menstrual cramps for women with endometriosis.
A Vitamin B12 deficiency can interfere with the synthesis of DNA and has also been known to thereby increase the risks of abnormal cell growths within the body, such as encouraging endometrial cells to reproduce in abdominal cavities and in some extreme cases both the lungs and brain.
